What is Depression?
By Alex Shade, LCSW Health Consultant

Depression is a very common, medical illness that can affect anyone. Depression is a treatable illness.

Symptoms of depression include:

  • Anger or irritability
  • Sadness
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Lack of interest in activities you usually enjoy
  • Guilt, feeling inadequate or worthless
  • Feeling tired most of the time
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Appetite changes
  • Feeling “slowed down” or “speeded up”
  • More aches and pains
  • Thoughts of suicide or death

Depression occurs in 3 ways:
  1. When the body is depressed a person sleeps poorly, eats differently, has less energy, struggles with concentration and has more aches and pains
  2. When behavior is depressed a person does much less than usual. She/he talks less, produces less, and socializes less.
  3. When the mind is depressed, thinking changes. A person depressed experiences more intense negative and painful thoughts about the past, present and future.
